Who We Are
The Freelance Musicians Association (FMA) is a grassroots body of independent and freelance musicians representing every genre, discipline, and background. We are the collective voice of independent musicians within the American Federation of Musicians (AFM) from across the United States and Canada.

What started as a series of regional education modules and conference meetups has evolved into a powerful, self-governing body. In September 2025, the FMA began meeting as an international collective of members to address the specific needs of the independent workforce. Our meetings provide a forum for musicians across the federation to share stories, debate strategy, and solve problems unique to their work.
We are currently working toward official recognition as a Player Conference, ensuring that freelance voices are not just heard but are a permanent part of the Federation’s decision-making structure. Whether you are an indie artist, a local player, or a gigging musician who weaves in and out of collective bargaining agreements, we welcome you.

The FMA is only as strong as the musicians who participate. If you have a vision for a better musical community, or if you’re looking for the tools to protect your craft, there is a seat at the table for you.
If you haven’t done so yet, please fill out this brief survey, to help the Freelance Musicians Association identify the most important issues, as well as assemble committees and working groups.
